FACTS ABOUT MAMMOGRAPHY
Mammography represents the best and most accurate test for
the early detection of breast cancer in women age 40 and older.
Every woman age 40 and older should have annual mammograms,
preferably on the same mammogram machine each year.
Mammography,
overall, can diagnose 90 percent of breast cancers early.
It is more effective in women age 50 and over than in women
age 40 to 50. However, it is very beneficial in both groups.
Mammography
is one of the main reasons that, for the first time, we are
seeing a lowering of the mortality rate from breast cancer
in multiple countries including, the United States, the United
Kingdom and Italy, to name a few.
In
the past, ultrasound has been utilized only to differentiate
between a cyst and a solid mass. With the advent of better
ultrasound machines, it is now being used to compliment mammography
to increase the early detection of breast cancer in women
with dense breasts. This is particularly useful in women between
the ages of 40 and 50. Ultrasound is not a screening test
and should be ordered only if indicated by your physician.
In
conclusion, all women age 40 and older should have yearly
screening mammograms. Some women with dense breasts on mammography
will require ultrasonography to supplement and enhance the
mammogram. Mammography is still the best screening test to
diagnose early breast cancer.
