Preventive healthcare is just as important for adults. Preventive
healthcare includes exams and routine tests that look for problems
before you are sick. It also includes immunizations to prevent disease.
Your doctor can evaluate your overall health and provide care for
a range of medical problems.
Age-appropriate exams and screenings can help detect health problems
early and prevent them from becoming more serious. Some screening
tests women should discuss with their doctor include: cholesterol
test; mammogram; Thin Prep Pap Test; colorectal exam; fecal occult
blood test; urinalysis; and blood count.
For men, routine exam screenings are equally important, though
less likely, since many men wait until symptoms arise before seeking
medical attention. Healthy men under age 40 should get a physical
exam at least every four years. After age 40, men should be screened
annually for colon, rectal and prostate cancer. In addition, periodic
screenings to evaluate blood pressure, cholesterol levels, vision
and hearing are also recommended.
Screening means looking for health problems in people who do not
have symptoms. Questions about your health, a physical exam, and
certain tests are part of a routine screening. The exam looks for
health problems that often occur in your age group.
During your visit, your doctor may ask you questions about:
- Your health history - if you have had any health problems
- Your family's health history
- Your diet
- Your exercise habits
- Whether you use tobacco, alcohol or other drugs
- Any other questions they feel appropriate
Complete and honest answers help your doctor give the best advice
for your health needs.
